Record Compensation Award for Paralysed Pedestrian

A woman who was knocked down by a car at a pedestrian crossing has received £8.5 million in what is believed to be one of the largest ever compensation awards of its type. Leanne Evans, now 22, was hit by a car at a pelican crossing not far from her home when she was 13 years old. The crash left her paralysed so she needs a wheelchair and round-the-clock attention.

 

The 79-year-old driver of the vehicle that hit Ms Evans drove around a lollipop lady, went across two roads and hit a wall. In the process, Ms Evans was struck, leaving her with a severe head injury. Apart from her physical paralysis, she also suffered memory loss and speech problems which require ongoing therapy.

 

Despite her injuries, it is thought Ms Evans will live a normal lifespan. This is one of the main reasons for the high payout. Her house has been specially adapted for her needs and she requires a team of eight carers throughout the day. Both her parents have given up their jobs to look after her and it is estimated that her care costs £200,000 a year.

 

The driver's insurers admitted liability for the accident and agreed to pay £8.5 million in compensation. The amount will be administered by the Court of Protection, the function of which is to assist in managing the affairs of those who lack the capacity to do so themselves.

 

The driver of the car was fined £75 and convicted of careless driving.
