Tripping Case Emphasises Need for Care

Another recent case has highlighted the need for employers to be particularly careful to ensure safe conditions underfoot. A Sainsbury’s worker received a substantial settlement after a fall caused by tripping on an ill-maintained concrete floor.
The accident occurred as the employee was working in the loading bay at one of the supermarket chain’s branches. He was carrying boxes when he tripped, fell and injured himself. As a result of the fall, he needed physiotherapy and was eventually required to retire on ill-health grounds, having been left with continuing pain and restricted mobility in his shoulder.
There had been previous complaints about the poor state of repair of the concrete surface of the loading bay, but nothing was done to repair it until after the accident occurred. The worker was awarded over £14,000 in an out of court settlement.
